From: The Glass-necked Guitar: a guitar owner's manual by Ian MacDougall.
Some guitar necks these days are called 'glass necks' because they are made out of fibreglass. However, the neck of this (hypothetical) guitar would be made out of pure and solid uncut lead crystal - say Waterford - or perhaps from water-clear scientific quality soda glass. It would be perfectly transparent, as would be the fingerboard, and shaped in such a way that notes as marked on it would be clearly visible, straight through the neck from behind it.
